Hildegard's Bio

Hildegard Anita Van der Spuy  (nee Fourie) was born in Christiana (South Africa) on January 26, 1953. She married Mervin van der Spuy on January 27, 1973. They have two grown children Mervin-Dave and Lindie.

She was ordained with her husband in 1977 and went into full time ministry with him, pastoring four churches until he accepted a teaching position in 1992.

Hildegard majored in Social studies and graduated with a Baccalaures Artium (BA) in 1981 at the University of South Africa.

Hildegard was very active in the pastoral ministry, excelling in pastoral care, women’s ministry, and the caregiving to seniors and the elderly. Her organisational skills were manifested in that she chaired the local church’s woman’s committees in all the churches they pastored. 

She lead women’s bible study groups, arranged women’s retreats and spoke at women’s seminars. With her husband she presented couples and marriage seminars and spoke at marriage enrichment retreats. She was the conference secretary of the First South African Congress on Christian Counselling with Gary Collins as the main guest speaker in 1996.

Hildegard served on the national women’s committee of the church (1982 to 1991). She was also appointed by the chaplain-general in the Defence Force to the women’s liaison committee and played a leading role in the caregiving to the soldiers in active duty. She was involved with the support and caregiving to the family of wounded soldiers and did hospital visitation in the military hospital. She served as secretary of the church’s regional welfare committee in Pretoria for nine years, and served as member of the church’s care-facility‘s management committee.

She is the co-founder and co-owner of Paraklesis Counselling and was the founder member and secretary of the Association of Christian Counsellors in South Africa.

Hildegard has extensive administrative experience - she managed a dental practice in South Africa for ten years. She worked part-time in the library at Providence University College (2002-2010) and now co-manages Paraklesis Counselling, arranges all the Paraklesis functions and co-presents the seminars.
